Does Winter Have you Feeling Tired?

Feb 02, 2020

Imagine this scenario: It's 5pm, you go to leave your office and head home. You step outside to a sky so pitchblack it must be 9 or 10pm. It's freezing cold and you just want to head home. You just want to head home, curl up under a warm blanket, and sleep. Somedays, I share this sentiment, but we are not alone!

A recent study has found that many Americans sleep more in the winter because the days are shorter. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has found that 34% of Americans say they sleep more during winter.

As tempting as a warm and cozy bed may sound, it is never a good idea to deviate too far from your regular sleep routine. Too much sleep can be almost as bad as too little sleep.

Here are some tips to help you sleep well whether it's sunny and 75 or it's cold as ice:

  • Set a bedtime routine and stick to it. Make sure that your bedtime gives you enough time to sleep each night.
  • Relax before bed. Yoga, meditation, tea, or a bubble bath are all great ways to unwind.
  • Avoid caffeine late in the day.
  • Reduce screen time before bed. Even the soft glow from the TV can disrupt your sleep.
  • Make your bedroom comfortable. It should be cave-like -- quiet, dark and a little cool.
  • And finally, if you are having problems sleeping, see a qualified practicioner who can help guide you through testing and treatment.
